Celebrate Your Independence at Wanderlust Copper

Celebrate Your Independence at Wanderlust CopperGot plans for the Fourth of July weekend? Unless your plans are already sewn up, I have a hot tip for you – assert your independence and head up to the second annual Wanderlust Copper. Heck, bring the family along; there’s lots for them to do. Meanwhile, you’ll relish not just great yoga sessions accompanied by live music, but also a holistic experience of personal renewal called up by playing in this temporary tribal gathering — a celebration of nature, music and mind-body exploration.

Started five years ago in Squaw, CA, and quickly growing with seven festivals this year, Wanderlust offers an extensive menu of enticing side dishes to yoga’s main dish. For example, you can start your day with a meditation, sunrise hike or trail run up the mountain. Between yoga classes, participate in an intimate conversation with mindfulness-advocate and Congressman Tim Ryan, (D-Ohio), peruse and shop at the Kula Market, watch an AcroYoga performance or enjoy an acoustic set by Moby.  If you are an outdoor enthusiast, substitute a yoga class with an outdoor expedition such as white water rafting, mountain biking or climbing.  As the sun goes down, sip delicious wines and beers at Winderlust.  In the evening, indulge in locally grown, gourmet eats a farm-to-table dinner by The Kitchen Community’s Hugh Acheson or watch a screening of Kumaré.

The celebration continues with concerts by Moby, DJ Drez and MC Yogi, followed by Flavorpill Moonlight Sessions for youngsters who can handstand and hula hoop all day on a few hours of sleep.

Given the traditional family focus of the holiday weekend, Wanderlust has added plenty of family-focused activities and options this year – a Primp My Ride kid-powered parade on Thursday and a Conscious Carnival on Saturday with stilt-workshops, hula hoop making, a solar bubble tower and more. And when Mom and Dad want to get their Seane Corn or Shiva Rea on, the kids can do their own yoga, crafts and games at Wanderkind Kids. The Wanderlands campground even makes an affordable home base for those who opt not to rent in the village’s ski condos.

Additional festival highlights:

  • Practice with top teachers including Shiva Rea, Seane Corn and Desiree Rumbaugh.
  • Test your balance with BOGA (Standup Paddleboard Yoga) on the Harbor.
  • Be wowed by the sensual contortions of Quixotic’s Cirque de Soleil-reminiscent performances.
  • Hear inspirational talks by Dr. Mark Hyman, Joel Salatin and others presenters.

As someone who stumbled upon Wanderlust Copper last summer, I can vouch that the non-stop yoga, abundant live music, surrounding natural beauty and playful vibe will get you; I promise.
